Every skincare or makeup expert will stress the importance of wearing SPF (Sun Protection Factor) daily. Whilst SPF protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays, helps prevent you from potentially damaging your skin and premature ageing, it has also been scientifically proven to reduce your risk of skin cancer too.
Whilst I am no dermatologist by any means, I am somebody who wears SPF on their face daily as the final step in my skincare routine and always have a handful on rotation. There are so many options available on the market. From sprays, creams, liquids and even powders. With lows of factor 10 all the way up to 100, so I know it may be overwhelming!
If you are in the market for a new one or simply don’t know where to begin – from a makeup wearer angle, I thought it maybe useful to share with you which of the many SPF’s I have tried and tested that I believe are worth your money.

As a rule of thumb (no pun intended) 2-3 fingers length of SPF is required to provide you with enough to cover your entire face and neck. If exposed to direct sunlight it is recommended to reapply every couple of hours to keep you protected.
Ultraviolet A (UVA) has a longer wavelength and is associated with skin ageing. Ultraviolet B (UVB), however has as shorter wavelength and is associated with skin burning. In short; A for Ageing, B for Burning.
Physical (mineral) sunscreens sit on the surface of your skin and act as a shield, blocking rays from penetrating the skin. Mineral sunscreens are considered more gentle and better for sensitive, acne or allergy prone skin. Chemical sunscreens are absorbed and sink into your skin and are usually lighter to wear and easier to blend.
SPF will not cause flashback in digital photography and not all SPF containing products will cause a white cast on your skin. The main ingredients that can cause this are zinc oxide and titanium oxide which are both opaque white and finely powdered minerals that are often used in cosmetics that contain SPF such as concealer or foundation. In most cases you’ll be fine but if that is a concern, look out for that when shopping if you plan on wearing when having flash photography taken.
Firstly consider what your skin type is, this will help you decide on the finish you’re looking for or ingredients within. Followed by what your intended use and preferences are. For example, if you are a makeup wearer and plan on spending a lot of time in the sun and will need to reapply every couple of hours, you may want to purchase a spray SPF. Although I would still recommend a liquid/cream SPF for your first application, I personally find sprays the best option when reapplying so it doesn’t disturb the makeup underneath.
A lightweight SPF, helps to protect against UVA and UVB rays. Specifically designed for sensitive skin types, that blends seamlessly into skin leaving no white cast behind.
It sits beautifully under makeup and gives a hydrated glow without feeling greasy. Also available in a matte formula if you’re more on the oily side, as well as a tinted version.
LA ROCHE POSAY | Anthelios SPF50
ULTRA VIOLETTE | Hydrating Supreme Screen SPF50+
One of my favourite SPF’s that delivers a beautifully silky, pearlescent dewy sheen to the skin. Hydrates, primes and protects in one.
They’re a brand that offers an array of innovative sun protection products so you will be sure to find one that slots effortlessly into your skincare routine.

FENTY BEAUTY | Hydravizor SPF30
CLE DE PEAU | SPF50
A beautifully luxurious creamy hydrating SPF that combines high performing skincare ingredients with sun protection.
I wish this wasn’t SO good because the price point makes me wince. If you treat your SPF as your morning moisturiser as I often do then as a luxury, you may be able to justify this beauty.
Vegan and suitable for sensitive skin, this lightweight and oil free SPF melts into skin delivering protection from UV rays and blue light.
I love to wear a tinted SPF, mostly when my false tan starts to wear off my face so I can match my face to my body when I want a no makeup day.
NUDESTIX | Tinted SPF30
ROSE INC | Solar Power SPF30 Serum
A daily sunscreen that supports skin against UV rays and delivers the benefit of a brightening serum. A pale pink, thicker than your average serum that comes in a dropper pipette. Feels hydrating and bouncy on the skin.
A new launch from Rose Inc that currently only looks to be available in the US.
Its rare you find an oil with SPF50. This one by Nuxe I discovered recently whilst on a press trip with the brand in Paris.
It’s silky and beautifully smelling formula provides high UVA/UVB protection for body and face and is water resistant and non-comedogenic.
NUXE | Body oil SPF50
LA ROCHE POSAY | Anthelios SPF50 Spray
If you’re a makeup wearer like myself and struggle to find a way to top up your SPF throughout the day. Opting for a spray can make reapplying as easy as spritzing yourself with a setting spray.
I also like the ease of a spray when applying body SPF, especially for on the go so you don’t have the mess of a cream. The water-resistant formula applies as a fine mist and dries down to an undetectable finish.
Another spray version which is easy to apply. This hydrating formula is kind to skin infused with 40% Vichy mineralising water and hyaluronic acid, suitable for sensitive skin and for use on face and body.
A non staining formula so you can relax knowing your clothes or favourite bikinis are safe from greasy marks!
